Hello Artist Eye community!
In the last post we discussed:
I chatted about that sweet spot that is often referred to as being in the “zone” and the many benefits of FLOW STATE including productivity, satisfaction and happiness. Below are tips on how to “TURN FLOW STATE ON” plus a fun activity to enhance or experience what it feels like!
How to TURN ON THE FAUCET: 4 Tips to Find Your FLOW
Is there a way to encourage this state to reveal itself more often? I believe we can cultivate this by creating an environment that encourages us to more easily slip into that sweet spot!
NOTE: this is different than “hyper-focus” which can sometimes be counterproductive and is more of a fixation on a specific task or job (goal oriented) with an “outcome”.
1. Set goals to have no goals… ok bear with me here.
I think one needs to set oneself up for success in the quest for ease and flow, to make it easier to immerse yourself in the task at hand. Instead of a vague goal like “work on chicken painting” try something more precise like “address the lighting in the back tree line this afternoon”.
This clarity helps focus your mind and sets the stage for flow and for me, really helps to eliminate the feeling of overwhelm (which is a sweet spot killer).
2. Minimize Distractions – The Silent Flow Killers
We’ve all been there: you’re in the zone, and then ding—a notification pulls you right out. Distractions are the arch-nemesis of flow. To keep them at bay, create a workspace that’s free from interruptions. Turn off unnecessary notifications, maybe even put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door. You’ll be amazed at how much deeper you can dive into your work when the distractions are minimized.
*Caveat: When I am in a state of flow, sometimes I feel other thoughts percolating because it really opens up the channels! Try to keep a notebook on hand. Analog is better than your phone which, if you have ADHD like me, you may get sucked into.
3. Find the Right Challenge Level
Flow happens when you’re working on something that’s just right—not too easy, not too hard. If a task is too simple, you’ll get bored. If it’s too difficult, you’ll get frustrated. Aim to find that sweet spot where the challenge matches your skills. Think of it like playing a video game: you want a level that’s tough enough to be exciting but not so tough that you just want to rage quit. Adjust your tasks or break them down into manageable chunks to hit that perfect balance.
4. Take Breaks – Recharge to Re-engage
Believe it or not, taking breaks is crucial for maintaining flow. Our brains aren’t designed to focus endlessly without a breather. Think of breaks as hitting the refresh button. Step away from your desk, take a walk, do some stretches, or grab a snack. These short pauses help recharge your mental batteries, making it easier to dive back into your work with renewed energy and focus.
Finding flow is a bit like finding a unicorn—it feels magical and rare, but it’s definitely achievable with the right approach. By setting clear goals, minimizing distractions, finding the right challenge level, and taking breaks, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing more of those blissfully productive moments.

BELOW I have created 2 MANDALA designs based on my favourite flower - the Peony! You can PRINT THESE OUT, use coloured pencils or for the more advanced: even trace them onto watercolour paper and paint them in (click the purple hyperlink to access a video on how to trace / transfer).
DESIGN ONE is simpler in nature - so if you are a novice to colouring, you may find this “juuuuust right”
DESIGN TWO is more complex in nature and thus will engage flow better if you are able to stay in that sweet spot between Intense Focus & Joy
Happy Colouring!
Let me know what you think of these!
I’ve had an urge to do some colouring lately- thanks for the inspiration!
